How to Prepare HHW for Transport

  • Pack wastes carefully in a box or plastic bin to prevent spillage during transport. Do not pack your items in a trash bag, garbage can, or comingle your HHW with your household trash.
  • Do not consolidate 1/2 filled containers into the same container or mix chemicals together into one container! Some materials may react with one another.
  • If you are transporting pool chemicals, do not place them next to any flammable materials such as gas, motor oil, cleaners, solvents, sanitizers, nail polish remover, or oil-based paint. Pool chemicals are oxidizers, and they react with flammable chemicals.
  • Do not transport bleach and ammonia next to one another.
  • Arrange similar chemical containers together (e.g., put all yard products together, put all paints together, put all cleaners together (separate bleach, ammonia, and vinegar) etc.
  • Please make sure containers are not leaking and lids are tightly sealed. If they are not sealed, place them in a larger container for transport.
  • Label materials that are not in their original containers. If you do not know what the substance is, contain and transport it carefully to the event.
  • Place your box of household hazardous waste in the trunk of your car, rear of your SUV, or in the bed of your truck.
